 Here is the beginning of a new painting of "Valley View" I am only about five hours into it at this point. I start by sketching it out with pencil. Then I sketch it out roughly with acrylic paint. This makes a nice base for the oils that will be painted on top later. The rough layout is made quite quickly when compared to the time it takes to do the detail in oil.   Nine hours into the painting: Now the acrylic under painting is complete. Certain areas like the trees are left dark and will be lightened in the oil painting stage.  13 Hours into the painting: I have used oil paints in the sky as well as in El Capitan (on the left). I generally will work now from background forward as I add detail with the oil paints.  18 hours into the painting: I have finished El Capitan plus the rocks to the left of it. If you look carefully, you can see Ribbon Falls on the left side of the canvas. I have added detail to the rock slide on the left side as well. I have also started painting Cathedral rocks on the right side background.  23 Hours into the painting. I have completed Cathedral rocks at the right and Brildalveil Falls. The detail on the pine trees is started. I start with the deepest colors and then add the sun highlights.  27 Hours into the painting. I have added more highlights to the pine trees. The meadow has been refined and the foreground plants and trees have been worked on (although they are not yet all completed). I have also put in some of the background shoreline.  32 hours into the painting: I have finished the trees and have done quite a bit of work on the water.  36 hours into the painting. I have worked on the water more and started with the foreground.  40 Hours into the painting: The water has been touched up.
